How to Refresh a Wash-N-Go During the Winter

Earlier this year I blogged about Princess’s  haircare regimen.  Since turning two, it’s been growing like crazy.  Now her spouting curls are in much need of something new during these cold months.  I was introduced to Curly Q’s For Kids, and decided to give it a try.

To freshen up Princess’s wash and go, I normally would have to rinse her hair with conditioner, detangle, scrunch, and allow it to air dry.  But with the weather getting colder here in New York, I want to avoid wetting her hair on a daily basis.

This is what her hair looks like when she wakes up in the morning.  It’s a bit frizzy and tangled.  On weekends, I braid her hair to help minimize knotting and frizzing.  But during the week, she hits the sack as is.  She refuses the satin bonnets and scarves.  A satin pillow case is the only option we have right now.

I’m also big on making sure to only use gentle and natural products on our hair.  The Curls line is sulfate, mineral oil, silicone, and paraben free.

To help redefine her curls, I apply about two quarter size amounts of the Curl Moisturizer and Detangler, gently remove tangles with a wide tooth comb, and scrunch.

After application, I take about less than a dime size amount of the Curly Q Custard through her hair.  I only use a little of this product because Princess’s hair is fine.  Adding too much may way down her locks.

Once I’ve completed the process, I style her hair.  I love braiding and adding cute accessories.  Her hair  usually stays frizz free, moisturized, and soft to the touch throughout the day.

Do you switch up you kiddos hair routine by season?

We do change up. Since they are older and their hair is getting super thick…and my oldest girl has very long hair I’ve found that banding their hair at night is a good option. It’s not really necessary when their hair is shorter but it helps when it grows out to keep from having to wet it so much in the morning. I put it in two low pony tails then put 2 or 3 more elastics down the pony tail to keep it from frizzing up. I’ve also discovered that banding doesn’t change the shape of their curl as much as braiding does. We still do braids from time to time…but this is much quicker too. It’s takes more time to do this at night but I can’t even explain how much quicker I can get them ready for school after investing the time the night before. I usually mist their hair in the morning with a leave in/ water mix …add a little leave in conditioner and we are good to go. Oh my gosh that was long!!!! And I didn’t even share all the details. Hah. I could go on for days but probably not necessary. I’ve learned so much about hair and I have a long way to go. I really feel it is important though so I can teach them proper hair care. I also want them to love their curls. 😉 Hope you are doing ok.

That’s a great routine. I wish I could spend time at night. She’s fast asleep by the time I get home. Do your girls wear satin scarves or sleep on satin pillows? The longer Princess’s hair gets, the more the challenge.

They use a satin pillowcase. I think it helps. They will not wear anything on their head. My oldest (almost 6) is especially picky about her hair. She will not wear a high pony tail or a bun and it’s so cute on her. Oh well. You pick your battles.

I only recently had to really buckle down on a night time routine with my youngest girl (almost 3) because when I didn’t do a protective style I had to wet it more which causes a lot more shrinkage.

If you decide to keep your daughter’s hair mid length it really isn’t to bad. It’s when it gets really long that the tangles become crazy tangles 🙂 hah.

I have an almost 2 year old daughter and almost 4 year old son with different hair types. My son has a very loose curl, probably closer to your daughter but he has more hair. My daughter has a tighter spiral curl pattern probably close to Chili from TLC but a little tighter. If her curls are stretched her hair is down the middle of her back.

His hair is easy as I could just cut it but decided to let it grow, so I’ve been trying to lightly spray his hair with a combo of water and conditioner in a spray bottle that has a very light mist setting (travel water bottles do the trick). Then, if it is a special day like picture day or more recently his holiday show I will put a pea size amount of As I am curling jelly or Kinky curly curling custard (organic product). His hair stays pretty shiny and curly throughout the day. If i do nothing his curls tend to get dry looking and he seems to loosen.

I haven’t come up a great method for her except put in large braids at night and take out (or not) in the morning. I need an easy solution since both hubby and I have demanding corporate jobs so managing time, especially in the morning is essential and ME trying to detangle her hair in the morning takes too much time when we are all trying to get out of the house. I would have more options if I could use w ater but I like you live in NY area so it is too cold now to do that. She is younger &always on the move so I usually try to braid when she is eating dinner or snack before bed.

RElla, it sounds like you have a pretty good routine. I totally understand about trying to find time between work. I wish I was home at night to prep Princess’s hair. It’s usually a mop by the time she wakes up in the morning. I’m still trying to get my hubby to chip in with the hair routine. As her hair grows longer, it’ll get harder to manage. SO far, this new routine does a pretty good job of detangling. Once in a while I go back to my homemade flax seed gel.

I know. I’m not looking forward to those tangles. I may have to change shifts. But, I’m screwed either way. It’s either I’m not around when she goes to bed, or when she gets ready for school. In my line of work I can’t have it both ways. I do a lot of prepping and deep conditioning on weekends.

I do agree with all of the concepts you’ve offered in your post. They are really convincing and can definitely work. Nonetheless, the posts are very short for newbies. Could you please extend them a bit from subsequent time? Thanks for the post.
