Lessons For My Kids: People Will Treat You How You Allow Them To Treat You

I’ve learned over the years that people will treat you according to how you allow them to treat you.

I remember being afraid to speak up as a kid. I didn’t want to ruffle feathers or seem confrontational. However, I later realize that staying silent meant that I accepted peoples’ lack of respect.

It’s okay to tell someone, “I don’t appreciate being spoke in that tone.” Sometimes a ‘quick read’ is all you need to get your point across. I’ve had to do that a number of times, especially in my career. I’m easy going and far from a diva. But, the minute someone tries to disrespect me, I’ll let them know.

If you choose to stay silent and allow people to mistreat you, then they’ll continue to do so. If you speak up, then they’ll never do it again.
