Natural Hair Update: How to Get Perfect 2nd Day Hair

It’s been a while since my last natural hair update. My hair has come a long way. I can’t believe it’s been almost three years since my last relaxer. Some have asked if I missed those touch-up appointments every couple months. The answer – absolutely not!

I can’t see myself ever going back to that. I may, however, blow dry just to change things up a bit. But, I hesitate because I want to set an example for Princess. Besides, I spent so many years with straight hair, I’m in no rush to go back.

Since my hair loss drama, my edges have made a comeback. In fact, it’s thicker and fuller than ever before. For the most part, I’ve kept the same routine with just a few minor tweaks. I alternate shampooing and co-washing my hair, and I deep condition every week. When it comes to styling, I prefer braid-outs. Wearing a wig, such as those wear and go wigs, at work gives my hair a much needed break. I keep my tresses in small braids beneath a satin scarf and my wig during the week, and take them out on weekends.

Keeping my braid-out coils preserved for more than just a day seemed hard at first. All the tutorials in the world couldn’t help. Some bloggers recommended doing a pineapple, while others suggest re-braiding at night. Seriously, who got time for dat?

Through trial and error, I’ve found a method that works for my 4c hair. I used to wear a satin bonnet. But, my hair has outgrown it. To achieve perfect 2nd day hair, I loosely roll my hair under and secure it with bobby pins.

Curling my hair under keep the ends preserved. Then I cover with a satin scarf, and go night night.

I remove the scarf in the morning, apply a little coconut oil through my hair, fluff, and go. Each strand is well defined and my hair remains in tact. This method can last up to a few days. By day three, my curls don’t look as fresh. So I re-wet, re-braid, and unravel the next morning.
