Here I am getting my daughter dressed after her shower when she says something that sends me back in time.
“I want to be big like you and Daddy,” she says.
“Why?” I ask.
“Because I want to be a grown up,” she responds playfully.
“Are you sure about that? Being a grown up is a lot of responsibility. You’d have to go to work and pay bills. That’s no fun,” I reply.
“Yes, it is. I wanna work and I wanna go to work with you and do the weather,” she says.
“Trust me. You have all the time in the world to grow up. Don’t rush. Enjoy being a kid,” I advise.
This is certainly an interesting conversation that I didn’t expect to have with her this soon. I remember feeling the exact same way when I was a child – only I was older. At ten, I couldn’t wait to be a grown up. I found myself counting down the days to adulthood. But now that I’m grown, I often find myself reminiscing about being a kid again.
I can’t front, there are a lot of perks to being an adult. You can live on your own, come and go as you please. But, you have way more responsibility. As a kid, my job was school. I was also involved in sports, had to do chores, and had a bunch of side gigs. But, I didn’t have to worry about a mortgage and utility bills. Back in the day, my bike was my mode of transportation. Now the tables have turned. There are moments when I wish I could be a kid again. But then I realize, being a mom allows me to do just that. I find myself going back in time. Playing with my children brings out the kid in me and that’s pretty cool.
I told Princess, “make sure you remember this conversation because one day you’ll come and say, Mom you were right. Being a kid is way more fun.”
