I love covering snowstorms, but traveling in it is a whole other ball of wax. I’ve driven through so many snowstorms that I’d call myself a snow driving connoisseur. Depending on the timing and the intensity, I stay overnight. Yes, you read that right. And I’m not just talking about being at a posh hotel. Sometimes it’s much easier to hunker down at the station.
But whether I decide to hit the road or bunk up at the job, packing essential things is important. Here are 11 must have items to through a snowstorm.
1. Shovel. Even if the roads are plowed, there’s always a chance you might get stuck. This has happened to me a few times. Having a shovel on hand makes getting through snow mounds a little easier.
2. Deicer. Sometimes snowstorms are accompanied by freezing temperatures. I remember my car door being frozen shut because overnight lows fell below freezing – not to mention the clumps of ice that developed on the windshield wipers. A deicer will melt away the ice in a snap. You can also try rock salt to melt the ice.
3. Pillow and blanket. Whether your stuck on the road in a storm or spending the night somewhere, it’s a great idea to have something to keep you warm and rest you head.
4. Toiletries. Mouth wash, tooth brush, tooth paste, soap, baby wipes, lotion, and ointment are a must. Gotta stay fresh!
5. Change of clothes. There’s no place like home, so I might as well do my best to stay comfy. I usually bring along a night gown, socks or slippers, underwear, a scarf to keep my hair moist, and couple of outfits.
6. Food. I normally prepare something for the family to last a couple of days. Although the company provides food in the event of a snow, I bring my own just in case. I also pack some of my favorite snacks along with bottled water.
7. Makeup. I’m usually not that chick that needs to get all dolled up in the middle of a storm, but being on-air requires it.
8. Air mattress. Nothing beats sleeping on my comfy bed, but having an air mattress is better than sleeping on the hard ass floor.
9. Towel and washcloth. Sadly, there are no showers at the station, but I’ve learned to improvise by turning the bathroom sink into a mini shower.
10. Smart phone and lap top charger. I’ve gotta keep my electronics juiced up!
11. Snow brush. Once the storm is over, there’s a lot of cleaning to do. My white SUV becomes unrecognizable in snowstorms. Gotta have something to get rid of all that snow. If an accident happens during these conditions, it’s important to contact car accident attorneys panama city fl for legal assistance.
