Journalism 101: Important Tips on Breaking into News and Juggling Family

Journalism has changed so much since I started my career over 10 years ago. Back then Facebook was in its infancy and YouTube was just beginning to get popular. Back then, Myspace was the go to social media site, but these days there is Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, and so many others that have become vehicles in how we get our news updates.

So when aspiring journalist and Hofstra undergraduate, Shannon Nia Alomar asked me to participate a Google Hang Out, another popular social media outlet, I couldn’t say no. In the interview I share tips on breaking into news, juggle family, and being a woman of color in the industry.

When I revamped and relaunched my site earlier this year, one of my goals was to answer some of the questions I often get asked by folks wanting to become anchors, reporters, meteorologists, producers, etc.

While I’ve gotten job offers in others states, I’ve only working in the New York City market. However, I’ve experience so much within my career that I want to share them with others trying to break into the industry. It’s not an easy field to be in. There are many challenges to overcome. But if you love what you do, overcoming those obstacles will only make you stronger both personally and professionally.

In this interview, I talk about dealing with hair loss a.k.a sista girl problems, dos and don’ts about interning, and how to make a lasting impression. There is so much more that I wanted cover. But no worries, there will be more journalism tips and tricks in future posts, so stay tuned.

In the mean time, check out the interview below. Be sure to show some love to Shannon by following her on Twitter and stopping by her website, Shannonnia.com

I’m working on preparing my demo reel while applying for news assistant positions. I want to report on news, but specifically, I want to do a weekly news vignette; and ultimately a 1/2 hour news program because there are lots of positive, informative and inspiring topics I’d like to cover. There is a topic I’d like report on and I’ve been thinking about putting together a proposal for this particular subject matter. I also want to create a news website. I am a member of the NABJ and I interned at ABC NYC. Although some days I lose a little hope, I do regain my strength to keep striving. There are some people like you, Stacy-Ann, who provides helpful information which is truly a blessing. Thank you Stacy-Ann it is truly appreciated.

Rachelle. I know what you mean. You are on the right path. As long as you keep pushing and making smart decisions, you’ll be fine. I have faith that you’ll get there.
