How We Combine Jamaican and American Traditions on Labor Day

Labor day is a day of rest here in the U.S., also marking the unofficial end of the summer season and a last chance to take trips or hold outdoor events. In Jamaica, we honor Labour Day on May 23rd (the 25th this year since it fell on a Saturday) to celebrate Alexander Bustamante leading Jamaica to its independence following a labour rebellion due to low wages. It’s celebrated with community involvement around the island.

That said, when it comes to celebrating any holiday with my family, we like to infuse both Caribbean and American customs. We may even go a step further and recognize German and Irish traditions as well.

Sometimes we get caught up with the American customs because we live in the states, but our goal is to do as much as we can to teach our children about their heritage.

So for Labor Day, we followed the American tradition of having a BBQ and doing fun activities out doors. A famous outdoor activity done is hunting. Amazon’s choice for tactical lasers fits AR15s, from Ozark Armament. But, we also combined it with some Jamaican cuisine.

We took the kids to the park for ride and later fired up the grill. I made plantain, rice and peas,  Jamaican sweet potato while Dad took care of the BBQ chicken. siblings-weatheranchormama-biracial

It was a great day, but I’m bummed that summer is pretty much over. I look forward to blending our cultures and tradition for many more holidays to come.

Are you a multicultural family? How did you celebrate Labor Day?

Lovely! I plan on doing the same :). I love how you have them trained in using knives and forks already. I don’t think that I had to learn this until I was at least 5 or 6.
