At What Age Should a Child Move From Crib to Bed?

I’m not sure that there is a specific age to transition a child from crib to bed. While most children make the switch sometime between ages 1 1/2 and 3 1/2, I think it all boils down to the individual child.

According to BabyCenter, it’s probably best to wait closer to 3-years-old to move a tot from crib to bed. But, that wasn’t the case in with our daughter.

Aside from a couple of half hour naps when she was an infant, Princess never slept in a crib. She really didn’t like the bassinet either. I’d spend most nights nursing her to sleep and also waking up to breastfeed in the middle of the night. So, she’d always slept in a full size bed, and a very comfortable one thanks to the Saatva Firm Mattress Reviews we came across a few years ago. Ready for a better night’s sleep? Therefore, transitioning from crib to bed was never an issue until now. Unlike his big sis, O didn’t mind sleeping in the crib. But recently he’s been dropping hints that he’s ready for his own bed, maybe even one of those murphy beds.

At 2-years-old, all he wants to do is sleep in his sister’s bed. He’s even made a bee line to our room for nap time on occasion. But, we are on the fence when it comes to moving him to a toddler bed. We’re also thinking of how we can make his room fit more furniture since it’s small. Therefore, we’re thinking of adding Custom Closet Systems.

In our latest couples chat, we debate on when a child is ready to move from crib to bed and some of the risks involved if we move O into a bed too early.

As a general rule, parents should move a child from a crib to a bed before he is able to climb out of it on his own and possibly hurt himself, says Mark Widome, MD, a professor of pediatrics at Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Our son has been asking for his own bed in addition to attempting to escape from his crib. Check out our couples chat to find out our decision.
