Tips for Dads: How to Style Kids’ Curly Hair

Let’s face it; most Dads don’t do curly hair. They leave that task to moms, other female family members, and the professionals. But it shouldn’t be that way.

In this day and age, society is moving away from the traditional gender specific roles. Women work just as much, if not more than men. Men are also taking on what many would refer to as “woman roles around the house,” including styling curly hair.

When I offered to teach my husband to style our daughter’s curly hair, he gave me a sarcastic look.

“Really?” he asked.

“Seriously. What if there’s a storm and can’t come home. What are you gonna do?” I responded.

Having my kids leave the house with messy hair is one of my pet peeves. I know that’s exactly what would happen if I got called into work at the last minute, or had to work overtime due to breaking news.

Our daughter was about two years old when I gave my husband his first lesson in biracial haircare. I kept it short and simple.

“Don’t worry about using a comb. Just spray with water and detangle with your fingers,” I instructed. I gave him a demonstration and guided him through the process. He was a bit awkward at first, but got the technique down in just a few minutes. Now, he is able to get the kids dress and style their curly hair with no problem.

I’m sure there are some fathers who have already gotten this down pat too. But if the guy in your life refuses to give hairstyling a shot, share this post to help change his mind.

  1. Keep hairstyles simple. Moms don’t expect guys to put together an elaborate braided hairstyle. You can create a cute look by combing through your daughter’s damp curls, adding a moisturizer or leave-in conditioner, and finishing off with a headband.
  2. Ask for help. When I asked my husband to style our kids’ hair before school, he asked me to lay all the products and tools out. As long as he didn’t have to go rummage the rough the house for everything, he was okay with it. As a bonus, I also prep their curls the night before, which means a lot less tangles for him to comb through the following morning.
  3. Practice. Like with anything in life, you’ll only get better at something if you practice.

So far, my husband is doing pretty well in the hair department. It’s great knowing if I’m not around, he’s able to take over hair duties with ease.

Should more dads do hair or should we leave that task to the ladies?
