Curly Hairstyle of the Week: Cute Braided Bun Tutorial

Jamaican cornrows was usually the go-to-braided hairstyle when I was a child. Now that I’m a mom, I want to pass down this tradition to my daughter. So for our Curly Hairstyle of the Week, we are doing a cute braided bun tutorial.

This style took us about an hour to achieve. I know that may seem like an extremely long time for some people. But keep in mind that it depends on the length, texture, and thickness of the hair. Times may also vary based on skill level.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Wide tooth comb
Rat tail comb
Detangling spray/water
Gel
Bobby pins

Directions:

Start by detangling hair. Depending on hair texture, you may need to add some product to make styling easier.

Princess’s hair doesn’t need much. I like to add water and a little gel to keep braids in place. To make hair more manageable, we part curls into two sections then secure the bottom half with a hair tie.

Part another small section on top and begin braiding. Be careful no to pull hair too tight to avoid tension hair loss also know as traction alopecia. I see this happen way too often. When hair is pulled too tight, the pressure can lead to ball spots. If done too often, hair follicles can become damaged leading to permanent hair loss.

Repeat by parting small sections and braiding hair. Once you’ve finished braiding each section, Cornrow into one big section.

Wrap hair into a bun, secure with pins and add accessories.

Feel free to tie hair down with a satin scarf at time, so that style stays fresh the following day. This protective style can also be worn for a few days.
