School is just around the corner! Whether you’re homeschooling or sending your kids off to school, there’s a lot of preparation that you’ll need to do in order to have a seamless transition.
8 easy ways to prepare for back to school
Review homework
It actually sounds a bit odd, but some schools assign homework over the summer. Our daughter had to complete a packet for first grade. Her assignments included a weekly journal entry, math problems, and book reports.
We designated time during the day and before bedtime for homework, so she won’t have to cram everything in at the last minute.
If your child dodged the homework bullet this summer, find other ways to keep him up to speed like reading books. You can also prepare by going over course work from the previous year because the start of the semester usually involves a review.
Bargain shop
There’s no need to break the bank when shopping for back to school clothes. Cookies kids has everything you need for your little ones. Whether shopping for uniforms or regular clothing, you’ll find things at bargain prices.
Speaking of bargain shopping, nothing beats the dollar store. I was able to find notebooks and other items at unbeatable prices. Whatever you do be sure to compare prices. There are apps you can download that can save you the time and hassle of going from store to store.
How to Get Organized
Have a Calendar handy
Our routine changes with the seasons, so having a Calendar is important to staying organized. Between my freelance work schedule, school, and our daughter’s extracurricular activities, things can get pretty confusing. Writing everything down will keep your entire family on track.
Have a check list ready
Have a checklist ready to go. My husband and I keep the same checklist in our smart phones. It includes the day’s routine, including drop off and pick up times as well as meal plans for he day. If for any reason we need to switch roles for the day, we each have a copy to allow for a smooth transition.
Clean out closets
I’ve been guilty of holding on to clothing a little too long. Take some time and get rid things your kids have outgrown and make room for new clothes. That way you get rid of the clutter and start the school year off fresh. If you need additional storage space for your kids’ old clothes and other items that clutter your home, you may consider renting a self storage unit. Alternatively, if you need a larger-scale solution for discarding old items and for a dumpster rental Roanoke, call Roanoke Junk Removal & Dumpster Rental.
Focus on Health
Adjust bedtime schedules
Bedtimes are usually a bit more flexible during the summer months for our family. But, we can’t take the chance of having a crazy sleep schedule when school begins. Start a bedtime routine that will remain consistent throughout the school year. It’s a great way to get kids back into the swing of things.
Get annual check ups
I admit that I sometimes fall behind with doctors appointments, and I’m sure I’m not alone. Save yourself the headache of trying squeeze in appointments around school and work times. Get it done early!
Get kids mentally prepared
It’s a great idea to have a chat with kids before they head back to school. This would be a great time to find out how they’re feeling about starting the new school year and talk about expectations.
Our daughter is excited about the 1st grade. Our son, on the other hand, doesn’t want anything to do with school. He’ll be starting pre-school at a new location, and is a bit shy when it comes to meeting new people. Fortunately, they’ll both be in the same building. So having big sis near by will hopefully ease his anxiety.
