Day in the Life of a Meteorologist

Day in the life of a meteorologist varies depending on who you ask. Even though I no longer work full time, I sometimes get called in to fill-in for the morning meteorologist at my old station, News 12 Networks. People often ask me about my job as a weathercaster. They’re shocked when they find out how early I wake up in the morning. So, I decided to vlog about my on-air gig.

I break it all down from the moment I wake up to the end of my work shift. You can find the “Day in the Life of a Meteorologist” on my Weather Anchor Mama Youtube channel. Please don’t forget to like the video and subscribe to my channel.

5 Things I love About being a Journalist

I love it!

When I first began my career in TV, I was a general assignment reporter. But I realized that it wasn’t for me when I became an intern. I remember covering a story about guy who killed his ex-girlfriend. She and I were about the same age and the way she died gave me chills. Someone discovered her brutally beaten naked body in her dorm room days after her gruesome death.

I had the difficult task of approaching family members, and had a hard time getting past the tragedy. Despite my reluctance, I continued on my path to becoming a reporter. But I eventually decided to switch gears. Oddly enough not everyone shares the same experience though.

Some of my colleagues say they’ve become numb to tragic stories. But it’s not always so easy for everyone. The experience I had as an intern discouraged me from hard news coverage, which ultimately led me to entertainment and feature reporting.

I actually never thought about meteorology until a news director contacted me about being a weathercaster at a local NY TV station. The moment I stepped in front of the green screen for my first weather forecast, I knew that I was right where I wanted to be.

It’s Challenging

Going to a job that’s too easy to do isn’t my idea of fun. I love the challenges that forecasting the weather brings. Whether covering severe weather or hot sunshine days, weather forecasting is never cut and dry. I often have the difficult task of covering snow events. Dissecting weather models and trying to figuring out snow totals has it’s challenges, but that’s why I enjoy it.

People depend on me

Our focus groups often indicate that most people watch the news for the weather. We’re providing a service that helps people plan their days, and it’s great to know that they depend on me to let them know the whether conditions before heading out the door.

The cool perks

There are a lot of advantages when you work in TV depending on where you work, of course. Some stations provide hair, makeup, and wardrobe. Being a journalist also allows you a press pass in some cases, which means having access to all kinds of cool events.

You get to meet people from all walks of life

I’ve met so many people throughout my career. From fans to politicians and celebrities, I’ve been fortunate to connect with people from all walks of life.

What do you love most about your career?
