It’s been a while since we’ve done one of our curly hairstyles. For those of you new to the blog, our “Curly Hairstyle of the Week” is a popular feature of weatheranchormama.com. I began creating fun hairstyle tutorials as a way to bond, empower, and teach my daughter Anastasia to love her curls.
It’s also a great way to connect with other parents wanting to learn how to style their children’s hair.
Anastasia ‘s been so busy with school and extracurricular activities, so it doesn’t leave much time to create unique hairstyles.
She’s been doing a fantastic job taking care of her hair and styling her curls. It’s long and healthy despite being in the pool, almost every day, sometimes twice a day. Now that she has some time off, she requested a braided hairstyle.
Braided Hairstyle Demo and Tutorial
- Shampoo and deep condition. Using a clarifying cleanser is important to gently remove product buildup. A hydrating shampoo is essential to adding moisture to the hair. Following up with a deep conditioner is also important, and helps with the detangling process. Since Anastasia plans on wearing the style for a while, I wanted to make sure to strengthen her curls and improve manageability with a deep penetrating hair mask.
- Add Leave-in conditioner for long lasting moisture and protect against damage.
- Heat protectant. There are so many different options on the market, but we chose a serum that adds shine and protects it against thermal heat that can lead to damage.
- Blow dry. After applying heat protectant, follow up by gently blow drying hair from ends to root. This will make braiding manageable. Pro tip: You can remove excess shed hair and avoid breakage by parting in small sections and using fingers to safely remove tangles beforehand.
- Part hair in smaller sections.
- Apply oil and gel while braiding each section to ensure long-lasting style.
How to Maintain Long-lasting Braided Hairstyle
Once the braided hairstyle is complete, apply finishing touches. Anastasia chose to leave the ends out. We added more styling product, a little more heat protectant, diffused the curly ends for a couple minutes, and then allowed her curls to air dry. She sleeeps with a satin bonnet, specifically designed for long curly hair. In the morning, she slays her edges with edge control. Throughout the week she adds leave-in conditioner and finger coil the ends.
