Our Daughter’s Health Diagnosis

If you follow our family’s journey, you probably saw the video where I shared the news about my daughter’s breathing struggles. Today, I want to give you the full picture — because this health diagnosis has been emotional, eye-opening, and honestly, just one of the many challenges that come with raising young athletes.

My daughter is a high school sophomore and a competitive swimmer — the kind of kid who pushes herself, thrives in the water, and loves the sport with her whole heart. So when she started having trouble breathing during practices and meets, I knew something wasn’t right. At first, we thought it was just fatigue, maybe nerves, or even intense training. But the symptoms kept showing up: tightness in her chest, coughing, and that look in her eyes that said, “I can’t get enough air.”

When Swimming Started Working Against Her

It turns out, chlorine — which swimmers basically live in — may be playing a role too. It can irritate the airways, especially for kids who spend hours in indoor pools. And when you mix heavy breathing, endurance training, and a chlorinated environment… it can be the perfect storm.

So we started the testing process and the results finally gave us clarity. Her airways weren’t opening up the way they should. We finally knew what we were dealing with.

The Health Diagnosis: Exercise-Induced Asthma

The doctors confirmed what her body had been trying to tell us: she has exercise-induced asthma. For her, it shows up most when she’s pushing herself at peak performance — and the chlorine exposure doesn’t help.

This isn’t a setback as much as it is a roadmap. Once we had the name, we could finally build a plan.

The New Game Plan

She’s now using an inhaler — a pump — before she gets in the pool. And wow, what a difference. It helps her airways open so she can take in more oxygen, and it gives her better breath control as she swims. She’s learning how to manage her body in a new way, and I’m watching her step into this challenge with such strength and maturity.

The Reality of Raising Young Athletes

People often see the medals, the meets, the personal records, the highlight reels. What they don’t see are the hard parts — the injuries, the doubts, the health scares, the long nights waiting for test results, or the emotional toll on both the kids and the parents.

This is just one of many challenges we’ve faced — and probably not the last. But this journey is teaching us so much about resilience, advocacy, and listening to your body.

Moving Forward

She’s not letting this health diagnosis stop her. If anything, it’s making her smarter, stronger, and more aware. With the right plan, the right tools, and the right support, she’s still diving in, still racing, still chasing her goals — just with a little more strategy behind every breath.

And as her mom, I’m right there cheering her on. If you’re a parent going through something similar with your young athlete, trust me — you’re not alone. And your kid? With guidance and support, they can keep shining in the sport they love.
