What Does Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage Nationwide Mean for Kids?

History was made when the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution will now guarantee a right to same-sex marriage on Friday. This has been a long journey for many. But what does legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide mean for kids?

There are still those who cringe at the sight of two people of the same sex kissing. Many of them believe it’s not what God intended. When you add kids to the mix, some folks may feel that kids shouldn’t be raised by gay parents.

I still remember the days when gay couples fought to become their partner’s next of kin, It’s been an uphill battle to gain the same rights given to heterosexual married couples.

I recall getting into heated discussions with friends about this topic and my opinions have remained exactly the same.

There was a time when black people weren’t allowed to get married. In fact, that’s how the “jumping the broom” tradition got started. Slaves weren’t allowed to get hitched, so they held their own private marriage ceremonies.

The same can be said for interracial couples. Mixed marriages were legalized in a few states in the 1950s. After the Lovings story broke, more states followed suit in the 1960s.

That said, I’d feel like a hypocrite if I were to say that I’m against same-sex marriages. As far as I’m concerned, I’m on the side of whatever makes you happy.

When the ruling came down, throngs of people waving rainbow flags and holding signs chanting, “Love has won!” Some had babies with them and I wondered, what does legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide mean for kids? For starters, there will eventually be more tolerance overall. But, I’m sure kids will have questions, which I hope will be addressed by parents.

Even though these marriages are now legal, there will also be concerns and questions from other kids growing up with a mom and dad or single family household. There may even be some parents who won’t comfortable with their child playing with a child who is raised in a same sex household.

Not to long ago, Princess asked about this type of family dynamic and we approached the topic honestly. At 4-years-old, we basically told her that some kids have two moms or two dads.

Lets face it; this world is constantly changing. Right now, my family represents the 15 percent and with more gay marriages, they will also represent a small percentage. And, they too should have the right to love in peace.
