On Your Feet! Fun Date Night Idea NYC

On Your Feet! is definitely out of this world. If you’re looking for a fun date night idea in NYC, this should be at the top of your list.

My husband and I had a chance to see On Your Feet! at the Marquis Theatre in New York City the other day – on a school night no less.

Planning date night on a weekday was a challenge in and of itself. Let’s face it; the days of getting dressed and out the door are long gone. Now that we have two kids, there’s a lot of pre-planning involved before stepping outside.

The first thing needed to get this show on the road was making sure we had a sitter. Fortunately, Grandma was able to come over after school. I worked the night before and my husband worked that day. Needless to say, we were exhausted. But it didn’t hinder us from having a great time.

I got the kids ready and off to school that morning, and picked them up in the afternoon. It was a short time frame between getting them home and catching the train into Manhattan. So, there was really no down time.

I made the kids’ dinner the night before and made sure everything was set for the following school day. My mom stayed with them for the rest of the day, and followed their usual bedtime routine. Thank goodness the night went off without a hitch.

About On Your Feet!

On Your Feet! is the story about the life and music of seven time Grammy award winning international superstar Gloria Estefan and nineteen Grammy winning producer, musician and entrepreneur Emilio Estefan.

The Broadway musical begins in the 1960s with Gloria as a little girl – her father is serving in the Vietnam War. She later meets Emilio and we see their rise to fame with the Miami Sound Machine. The musical captures the very essence of their natural talents and love for each other.

It’s such a powerful story about love, determination and resilience that we all can relate to in some ways – like dealing with family drama, tragedy, or a near death experience.

I was just a little girl when Gloria Estefan suffered the terrible bus accident. I remember wondering if she was going to survive. It’s amazing to see her strength and will to make it through that time in her life.

How Gloria Estefan Inspired Me

The story also takes us back to the 80s in the 90s with hits like Rhythm is Gonna Get Ya, Anything For You, Here We Are, and Everlasting Love. These were the songs that inspired me growing up, and played a huge role in my transition from living in Jamaica to moving to the United States.

Gloria and Emilio’s is Cuban roots are relatable to my Caribbean background – our islands not too far apart. Their story is a reminder of how difficult it is to leave home and start over in a completely different country – not to mention having to deal with so many obstacles along the way.

This Broadway musical is definitely a must see. I’m still in awe of the live singing, dancing, and quick changes. In addition to putting on a memorable performance, the production is also raising money to benefit Latin performers looking to pursue the performing arts.
