Family Fun Summer Series: Salute to America

It’s not everyday we get to take the kiddos to see a concert and fireworks. This weekend my hubby and I did just that. For our “Family Fun Summer Series,” we thought the kids would enjoy it. Besides, it was free! Well, actually our tax dollars fund these types of events. But, whatever.

The town hosts different shows throughout the summer. This weekend was the “Salute to America,” which featured an old school band, followed by a fireworks display. Our neighbors, Barry and Marjorie had been telling us about this for years, but we’ve never attended. So, we weren’t sure what to expect.

The park where the event was being held was jam packed. People brought blankets, coolers, chairs, as if they were going on a champing trip. The only thing we toted were the kids and one stroller. I was beginning to think that we were ill prepared.

We parked at a neighboring park, and took the two minute free shuttle to where the event was being held. Princess was pretty bummed about the fireworks not getting underway immediately. Her mood quickly turned when she ran into one of her friends from school.

We later met up with our neighbors. Everyone sang along to the gosh awful band. Even though they couldn’t hold a note, the townsfolk love it. They sang patriotic songs like “God Bless America,” while the Supermoon provided a nice backdrop to the scene.

The fireworks more than made up for the singing. It was a nice night out and the kids had a great time. By the end of it Baby O was pooped, but Princess still had a ton of energy. We stopped off to get ice cream on the way home and then called it a night.

What did you do this weekend?
