I wouldn’t exactly call my daughter’s first birthday party your usual celebration. Decorations were kept at a minimum, music at a nice even tone, and we ditched kiddie games. Princess wasn’t even walking yet, so we wanted to keep things pretty simple. Even though it was more of an adult event, skipping the alcohol was a no brainer. I assumed that serving non-alcohol beverages at a kid’s birthday party was standard practice- or so I thought.
When Princess was invited to a 1-year-old birthday party, I didn’t think to ask about booze. After driving for two hours we get there. Much to my dismay, there were beer bottles and cans mixed in with children’s box juices in a cooler. I was appalled at the sight of it all. My husband shot me a stern look of disapproval. That was his way of saying, “Let’s bounce!” But, I convinced him to stay a while. I would have felt weird if we abruptly left. I chose not to bring up the subject to the mom, who had invited us. But in restrospect, I wish I had said something.
My hubby and I wanted to flee the scene with our 18 month old, but chose to stay for a few hours.
What would you have Do you think it’s ok to serve alcoholic beverages at a child’s party?
