Cobra Braid Curly Hair Tutorial

I remember learning the cobra knot as a child growing up in Brooklyn. My siblings and I attended a summer day camp at P.S. 272 near Bayview houses. We learned all types of knots like the Chinese staircase and the Cobra knot with lanyards. So we decided to do the cobra braid on my daughter’s curly biracial hair for our Curly Hairstyle of the Week.

When it comes to styling curly hair, starting on wet hair makes styling easier. Anastasia is also tender headed like her mama. The most gentle pull can be extremely painful. Wet hair reduces flyaways without having to apply a ton of hair products.

As you can see in the video, I started with a simple ponytail. Then, I used a brown hair tie and followed up by using a piece of her hair to wrap around the ponytail and pinned in place.

Use a rat tail comb or soft brush to smooth hair, and seal in moisture with your oil choice. You can also use some styling gel for a soft hold.

Take two strands from either side of the ponytail to begin the cobra braid. It takes a little practice, however, the video tutorial illustrates it perfectly. Feel free to stop and rewind to watch it over and over again.

Use an elastic and secure in place, once you’re finished with cobra braid. You can also take another piece of hair and wrap it around the elastic for cleaner look. Make sure you secure it in place with a bobby pin to prevent it from unraveling. Lastly, allow curly hair to air dry and you’re little one is good to go.
