How to Do a 4-Strand French Braid on Curly Hair

I’ve seen the 4 Strand French Braid done a bunch of times on straight hair but never on curly hair. For our Curly Hairstyle of the Week, we wanted to give it a try on my daughter’s beautiful curly locks.

We sectioned off the top part of her hair and separated the back by using an elastic. It’s easy to see the pattern on straight hair. But on curly hair it’s a little bit more of a challenge, so I spray the hair down with water to allow for that and allow for easy manipulation.

We divided the hair into four sections, and as you can see in the video, I’m doing a figure eight on her hair. On the left hand side, I’m going under the second piece and then over the third piece. We repeat on the opposite side, but this time taking the strand and over the second section and under the third section. So it’s a figure eight on either side.

This style is easy after you get the hang of it. This is a great style for school because when the kids are playing, this is a great way to keep the hair out of the face. Sometimes it’s tricky with hard headbands because if they get hit in the head it can hurt. But this is like a faux headband and a great style to enjoy.

It’s a fun style. You can kind of make out the ribbon like pattern in the middle and by spraying the hair down it makes it easier to see the pattern. If I were to do it on dry hair, it would be more of a challenge and also more stressful on her hair and we don’t want that.

Once you get to the end, you continue the same pattern and that little piece in the middle is what’s creating that ribbon like pattern. Once that runs out, we secure with an elastic. It’s a really cute, fun braid. This can be worn so many different ways. You can put it back into a ponytail, you can have the back out. Either way, it’s fun. It’s cute. It’s great for all occasions. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It can be a little messy and still look really cute.
