What You Should Know About Raising Biracial Children

When it comes to raising biracial children, I’ve realized there is just no secret formula. Many have said mixed kids are so cute, and they just may have a point. But behind the cuteness, there are many concerns that we’ve had as an interracial couple raising biracial kids. My hubby and I discussed some of them in our recent couples chat.

Here are some of the topics covered in our video:
1. Choosing a diverse school. Even though we live in a diverse community, the schools aren’t as mixed. With failing test scores at a predominantly black elementary school in our district, we didn’t want to send our daughter there because of poor grades and lack of diversity.

2. Being forced to “pick a side.” Unfortunately, biracial kids often feel stuck in the middle. At times, they are rejected by either race because they may not be “black” or “white” enough.

3. Insecurities. I’ve touched on this topic many times, but it never gets old. Many people assume that being mixed means that you have no insecurities, but that’s not true. Biracial kids often struggle with their identity and that’s an important subject matter for our family.

4. Is there a difference between raising biracial girls vs. biracial boys? This is debatable and my husband and I weigh in on how the challenges of raising our kids of each gender. Believe it or not, there are a lot of differences.

5. Our plan moving forward. As parents we believe in addressing these issues head on. This is definitely a work in progress and we want to be as upfront and as transparent as possible with our kids.
