If you follow me on Periscope, then chances are you saw my scope where I announced my new job. For those of you who missed it, let me give you an update on what I’ve been up to, along with five reasons why I love my new job as a lunch lady at Princess’s school.
- Flexibility. Being a lunch lady ain’t glamorous, neither is working in TV. But, it’s pretty flexible. I’m only required to work at least twice a month. If for some reason I can’t make it, I can get someone to cover my shift and make up the day.
- Free food. While students are required to pay for lunch, we get to sample the goods. Some would consider it payment, since we don’t actually receive a wage. With all the work that we do, we really don’t have time to sit down and eat anyway. But it’s nice to know that we can, if we get hungry.
- I get to see my daughter. Princes likes to tell her friends that her mom is the lunch lady. It’s also nice to be able to talk with her about her day and meet her friends.
- Socialize. Who doesn’t love to know the latest gossip? This is also where I find out the latest news and get tips from other moms.
- It’s rewarding. Even though I volunteer, it feels good knowing that I’m helping out.
I used to think that being a lunch lady requires helping kids open up containers and keeping the kids in order. But I’ve recently learned it’s a lot more than that. There’s actually cooking, cleaning, and so much more involved.
However, for a few hours a day and a couple times a months, it’s really not so bad.
Have you ever volunteered at your child’s school?
