It’s important to teach kids how to set new year goals. Why? Because it gets them in the habit of identifying things they want to accomplish and work hard at achieving them.
We started the tradition with our daughter a few years ago. Princess spoke about things that she wanted to become better at, we jot them down, and put them in a jar. Throughout the year my husband and I would check her progress. Once she achieved her goal, we would reward her with a prize.
If you haven’t done this exercise yet, you should totally get on board this year. It’s actually quite easy and kids have a great time thinking about things the want to accomplish.
Tips For Teaching Kids How to Set New Year Goals Share on XStart a conversation about setting goals for the upcoming year. We keep our chat light and simple, usually over dinner or during play time.
Allow kids to identify the goals they want to accomplish. We begin by talking about the things Princess is already good at as well as her accomplishments from the previous year, before pointing out areas that need improvement. It’s a lot easier to talk about the positive stuff first before diving into problem spots.
Make it a fun project. The first time we did this exercise, Princess wanted to write down her goals and put them in a bag. She even thought of goals for her baby brother, which I thought was so cute. Whether you decide to just talk about your goals, do a craft, make it something enjoyable for your kids.
Make sure goals are age appropriate. At 2, O’s goals are a lot different than his big sister. Moreover, the two have completely different personalities. So, my approach with each of them is different. While Princess and I will have a long conversation about goals, O will spend about 5 minutes on the subject matter.
I hope you find these tips helpful. The key is to make it fun and easy. While you’re at it, make sure you record the exercise and make that apart of the tradition as well.
