Blizzard 2016: Getting Through the Storm

It’s hard to imagine almost 30 inches of snow in New York City. Blizzard 2016 broke lots of records, and I’m so happy that I got a chance to cover it.

Forecasting the weather is what I do, so when I received the phone call to help out with snow coverage, I couldn’t say no.

My main concern was getting home. I had to work the early morning shift, and knew that I’d have no issues driving to the station with a couple of inches of snow on the ground. However, with the storm ramping up throughout the day, there was no way I’d be able to make my usual 45 minute commute.

I wound up staying locally at a hotel, which ended up being my saving grace. The one caveat to this ordeal was spending time away from my family. As I’ve mentioned before, it does come with the territory.

Nonetheless, we made the best of the situation. By noon on Saturday, I realized that blizzard 2016 would break records. In fact, it took the number two spot for biggest storms on record with 26.8 inches at Central Park. Not all of the buildings in this area were built for this kind of storm or harsh weather. As a result, people at their homes were also dealing with leaks, burst pipes, flooding, the works. Having expert bund lining installation done can contain those leaks. You may also consider using Industrial Grade Bund Liners. Many homeowners are probably going to need to hire storm damage restoration services to assist them. This kind of weather can have a serious effect on houses. One way to protect them is by installing a modified bitumen roofing and getting a durable rain gutter installation that can divert some of the water away from the walls and foundation. There are services that focus on residential gutters that can assist homeowners with this.

With Governor Cuomo and Mayor Deblasio shutting down the NYC, traveling was out of the question. We literally worked around the clock updating viewers on snow totals and changes to the ban.

While Mama was at work, Daddy and the kids loved watching the flakes fly and enjoyed the aftermath of Blizzard 2016.

The last couple of days have been insane – in a good way, of course. When I decided to stop working full time less than a year ago, severe weather was the part of my job that I knew I’d miss the most.

Right now, it’s awesome to have the best of both worlds. I’m able to spend more time with my family and fill-in doing what I love every now and then.

Some people have asked whether or not I’d return to work full time. To be honest, I’m really not sure what will happen. I’m always open to exploring opportunities. But for now, I’m enjoying my current situation.
