Cornrow Braid Video Tutorial for Beginners

Now that summer is over and school is in session, cornrows are usually our go-to-hairstyles. Because as temperatures get cooler, and the air gets drier, braids are great for retaining moisture. Plus, adding a cornrow gives any hairstyle flare.

Some people think it’s hard to do. But, cornrows are easy to do once you get the hang of it. Hopefully, you’ll fid this step-by-step tutorial helpful.

Cornrow Tutorial for Beginners

I like to begin by spraying hair with water. It’s a lot easier to braid when wet.

Cornrows are normally done smaller. But, I’ve decided to part the hair in two sections for the purpose of this video. So they look more like Dutch braids, which are usually done in larger sections. But, it’s really not much different. In Jamaica we refer to this style of braiding as cane row. It also depends on culture.

Make sure hair is fully detangled. After finger detangling, I gently comb through the hair with a large tooth comb from the bottom up just to make sure there are no knots.

Now it’s time to begin the cornrow. I like to use a fine tooth rat-tail comb to smooth the hair, and part a small section. With that small section, divide the hair in three smaller parts and begin as you would a normal three strand braid.

As you can see in the video, I labeled each section 1, 2, and 3. Start by taking right section also known as number one under the middle section, which is also known as number 2. Then take strand 3 and place under the middle section.

Repeat these steps and add in hair on either side as you go. It’s important not to pull hair too tight, as it may cause tension or traction alopecia. Also, add coconut oil (or which ever oil you prefer) to seal in moisture.

This braided hairstyle should take about 10 minutes, but time may vary depending on skill level and the number of braids. Be sure to add an elastic band at the ends to keep cornrow secure.
