Titanic. The Exhibition was an experience to remember. I learned about the British passenger liner as a child. Then the blockbuster movie came to the big screen in 1997 detailing some of the most heartbreaking journeys of people from all over the world.
The Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the Northern Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912. The “unsinkable” ship was traveling from Southampton, England to New York City when the tragedy happened. The ocean liner was carrying more than 2000 passengers and crew members. About 1500 people died, making it the deadliest sinking ship at the time.
More than a century later, the event still gets public attention and news coverage. Most recently, the Titan imploded not too far from the Titanic wreckage on June 18, 2023. The submersible, owned by American tourism and expeditions company Oceangate, was on an expedition to see the wreck of the Titanic off the Newfoundland, Canada coast.
Like those aboard the submersible, our son O’Shea has always been enamored with the story of the Titanic. He’s watched documentaries about the ocean liner and has created works of art dedicated to the ship. O’Shea has become sort of an expert on the historic ship. He has even asked to watch the movie but we don’t feel it’s age appropriate right now. However, we decided to take him to Titanic. The Expedition instead. The museum includes original artifacts from the voyage.
Titanic. The Exhibition comes with an audio guide that takes you through the various photos, handwritten letters, keepsakes and other personal belongings. There are many stories, including the Jack and Rose love story, about the dates and heroic gestures on board.
Visitors can also have their photo taken as they board the ship, and also get a feel of what it was like to walk the halls of the cabin replica. The 90 minute visit certainly lived up to the expectations. I was sad to learn that the Titanic. The Exhibition was closing its doors. Hopefully, it will pop up at another location soon.
