Father Shares Tips on Styling Son’s Curly Hair

Styling our children’s curly biracial hair isn’t on my husband’s list of favorite things to do, but he doesn’t mind doing it. He’s even become good at it! Most importantly, I get a much needed break and gets to practice. In fact, he’s got some easy tips on styling our son’s curly hair.

Keep him entertained. At 2, our son is extremely busy like most kids his age. I often have to chase him all over the house in order to style his hair. But his Dad recommends using toys and electronics to get him to sit still. He also bribes him with treats or threaten to get rid of his boogies with saline. It may sound cruel to some, but it works every time.

Keep it simple. Some parents may opt to have their kids get haircuts to make styling easier. But, I love our children’s curls. My husband and I were at odds about cutting our son’s hair at first. But, I’ve managed to convince him to let O’s curls grow indefinitely. For now, we have a simple routine that works well.

Go easy on the shampoo. To be honest, we rarely use shampoo on our kids’ hair. All it takes is a quick rinse with water followed by a scalp massage to cleanse his curls.

Moisturize. Adding and retaining moisture is the key to maintaining healthy curls. So using the right hair products is important. We use moisture enriched products that don’t contain mineral oils, parabens, or sulfates.

No styling tools needed. My husband never used any styling tools on his own hair and he doesn’t use a brush or comb in our son’s hair either. Believe it or not, fingers are quite effective when styling curly hair.
