Playing the Baby Card

These shades and smoothie keep her from having a tantrum

I’ve been known to play the baby card every now and then.  If I decide to make a pitstop at the local health food store, having a fussy child has gotten me to the front of the line faster.  Heck, the sales clerk has even carried my items to my car.  I don’t know if people feel pity on me, or if they want to get me and my screaming baby out of the store quickly.  I’m cool with it either way.  Trying to calm a child while focusing on making a purchase can be so frustrating.  So, there’s no shame in my game.

The other day I took my car in to get serviced.  The plan was to take Princess for her swim lesson, get back for lunch, wait for hubby to return home, and then head over to the dealership.  The problem was that Princess ended up falling asleep a little earlier than expected.  Waking her up would mean dealing with a cranky toddler for the rest of the day.  Even though dad was home with her, getting back before she woke up was also imperative.  I figured getting a shuttle back from the dealership would be cake- or so I thought.  When the service tech told me there was no one there to take me home, I pulled out the baby card.  I explained to the guy that I had to get back to my little girl, he pulled some strings, and I was able to make it back before Princess woke up.

Some may feel that I’m taking advantage of the situation.  But, I look at it as just being smart.  I could have waited while my car was being worked on, but that would take time away from getting other things done around the house.  Hey, sometimes a mama’s gotta do what a mama’s do.

Have you ever pulled the baby card?

My toddler plays her own card! She’s always getting free stuff. LOL! I don’t use the baby card cause I’ve had friends do it and it gets so annoying (one woman I know uses her child’s sickness everytime to get out of any plans we make – needless to say we don’t hang out anymore). But if someone sees me w/my daughter and bumps us to the front of a line (like when we were traveling to Nigeria) I’ll take it!
