What I Plan to Tell My Kids About Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela

I was just a young child when I heard about Nelson Mandela being released from prison in 1990 after nearly 30 years of being locked up. I had no idea who he was at the time. I later learned that he was an African anti-apartheid leader who fought for equality for everyone in South Africa. But his mission transcended the continent and his legacy has transcended time. Mandela is no longer with us here on earth. But his spirit will forever be in our hearts. I feel so honored to have experience his transformation from prisoner to president. As the world mourns the loss of Mandela, I think about ways to teach my kids all about this global icon.

A symbol of peace and hope, I remember hearing songs in honor of the Nelson Mandela. Now radio stations play those same songs to honor his legacy. Hearing people call in and talk about how he spread hope and faith makes me feel so inspired. But, hearing how my daughter reacted to the news coverage led to an epiphany.
