Something I Thought I’d Never Do

The other day a friend of mine told me that she and her family would be taking a trip to the slopes. “Black folks don’t snowboard,” I jokingly said.

“You’re right. Growing up there weren’t many of us there. But, my husband and I love it,” she responded.

Our conversation left me thinking about broadening my horizons – at least for my kids. And this would be the perfect time to do it.

The recent snowstorm dumped 6-12 inches across New York, so our area has been blanketed with the white stuff for the weekend. I made an impromptu suggestion to my husband of taking the kids sledding.

Unfortunately, every family had the same idea in mind because everywhere was sold out of sleds. We ended up borrowing one from a relative.

The park was packed with sled goers, but that didn’t stop us from joining in the fun. Baby O ended up sleeping in his carrier the whole time, so I didn’t want to attempt going down the hill. Plus, it was way too crowded- I wouldn’t have wanted to chance him getting hurt. However, big sis loved it!

I didn’t get a chance to hop on the sled, but there’s always next time. Lawd knows I HATE the cold. But I’m down for making an exception, if it means having fun sliding down a snow covered hill.

As for my comment about black folks not heading to the slopes, I guess I’ll be another exception to the stereotype. Oh and by the way, I was the only one at the park that day.

Good for you for getting out there! I like to ski and when I went for the first time I noticed I was the only brown face too. Mr. Lovebird can’t find ski shoes in his size so it’s never been an option for him, but we still went on our 1st annual family ski trip recently. It was a lot of fun and I noticed quite a few brown faces out there, but I honestly think the unseasonably warm 60 degree temps had something to do with it 😉

Lol! I love that you got out of your comfort zone. I thought the same thing too until I decided to try skiing with my sister and her friends. Had a blast! Haven’t been back since but would love to eventually do that.

I tried taking my little one out in the snow last Friday. She screamed the entire time so I am thinking she’ll have to be older to fully appreciate it.
