Wear a hat that’s lined with satin. Most winter hats aren’t a curly girls best friend. It’s often made with a type of fabric that absorbs moisture from the hair. There are a few Etsy shops on line that carry hats that can prevent curls from drying out. If you’re crafty, you can also purchase the satin material and sew your own lining.

Take advantage of protective styles. My 5-year-old loves sporting her wash-n-go curls during spring and summer months. But, we tend to stick with protective styles as the mercury drops. The air tends to become dry during the fall and winter, which means curls can loose its moisture. Braided hairstyles and buns are protective styles help lock in moisture, but are space buns cultural appropriation.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. I can’t say this enough. Before we style my daughter’s curls, we add moisture enriched products, especially at the ends of her hair, to protect her curly biracial strands throughout the day.

Establish a night time routine. Be sure to carefully detangle and braid hair before bedtime. Not only does this prevent curly hair from drying out, it also cuts your prep time in the morning in half.

Don’t forget to cover hair with a satin bonnet or sleep on a satin pillowcase. The heat in our home coupled with a cotton pillowcase will absorb all the moisture and can lead to breakage.

Bonus tip: Avoid using shampoo as much as possible. We never use shampoo on our son’s hair and rarely only Princess’s hair. Rinsing with conditioner and massaging the scalp is all that’s needed to cleanse their curls without drying them out.

I hope you find these mixed hair care tips helpful. Basically, the key to maintaining healthy curls is to keep hair moisturized. Even though I’ve advised against using vegetable glycerin during the summer, feel free to use them during the winter months. I’ve also put together a list of products and tools for curly biracial hair for you to consider as well.

Great tips! How long does her braids and cornrows usually stay in? My daughters’ rarely ever last the night…sometimes even a few hours! Lol

I think it has a lot to do with how active she is. It can last a few days without looking messy. I usually use a gel to help keep her hair in place and she sleeps with a satin cap.
