Protective styles are the way to go during cold months, and a hair bun style is a great option for our Curly Hairstyle of the Week. Why? Well, for starters it helps to retain moisture. It also protects the ends of the hair from damage. The best part is that you can achieve a bun style in 5-10 minutes.
How to Make the Perfect Hair Bun Style in Less Than 10 Minutes
Make sure hair is fully detangled.
I usually braid my daughter’s hair the night before to prevent knots and stretch the hair out a bit. Once I’m ready to start the bun, I add some detangling spray and gently comb through the hair with a wide tooth comb from end to root.
Make a ponytail. Feel free to use a soft brush to smooth out the roots. I personally like using a rat-tail comb, but use whatever works best for you.
The Secret to Making the Perfect Bun Style
If you want the perfect bun, use a bun maker. I love it because it takes the hassle out of spending time trying to get the perfect donut shape.
This reminds me of back home in Jamaica. Bun hairstyles are very popular, and some schools preferred girls to wear the updo or some other similar style. You can even make your own bun shape using a sock, but the problem with that is dry zaps the moisture from the hair.
- Pull the ponytail through the bun maker
- Separate hair in two parts carefully covering the donut shape
- Add a hair tie or elastic to secure in place
- Separate the remaining hair in two sections and then braid each section
- Take each braid and wrap it around the bun, and make sure you tuck the ends underneath
- Finally, secure with bobby pins and add your favorite hair accessory.

This is adorable!! I actually wear my hair in a topknot on my head to achieve curls overnight, but this is way cuter. 🙂
