When it comes to mixed hair care, you have take the time to learn about your curls. Returning to my natural roots has been a bit of a learning curve. I don’t want to make the same mistake on Princess’s naturally curly hair that I’ve made on my own, especially when choosing styling methods. That said, here are must have tools and products for curly biracial hair.
1. Satin bonnet or scarf. Princess would fall asleep on the pillow and end at the foot of the bed. So, getting her a satin pillowcase would be pointless, unless I get an entire bed set of satin sheets. The satin bonnet prevents her curly strands from drying out and keeps curly hairstyles in place.
2. Wide tooth comb. I rarely use combs and I avoid brushes like the plague on our hair. But it’s always good to have a wide tooth comb on hand.
3. Rat tail comb. Having one helps with isolating and getting rid of hard to reach knots. It’s also great for sectioning your curls.
4. Spray bottle. Water is a curly head’s best friend. Spraying Princess’s hair with water everyday helps with the detangling process.
5. Moisturizing shampoo that don’t contain sulfates, paraben, petroleum, and mineral oil. We normally shampoo hair once a week. We avoid ingredients that would strip moisture or coat the hair.
6. Moisturizing conditioner. This is so important for maintaining moisture and adding shine. Depending on the weather, we may co-wash midweek to add moisture to the hair.
7. Deep conditioner. Sunday is our designated wash day. We follow up the cleansing process with a conditioning mask for about a half hour.
8. Leave in conditioner. Kinky Curly Knot Today is one of my favs. It’s great for all hair types and perfect for wash-and-go curls.
9. Gel isn’t something we use on a daily basis, but it’s definitely a must have item for curly biracial hair. It’s great for defining curly ringlets.
10. Light oil. When the weather is cold, we usually follow up with an oil. Princess has a lot if fine strands. So a little goes a long way. Too much oil would weigh her hair down. Argan oil is one of my favorite oils to use on her hair.
11. Satin hair accessories. I’m pretty careful when choosing headbands and barrettes for our hair. Some of them absorb too much moisture, while others may pull out your hair. Satin works well for curly hair.
12. Hair ties and bobby pins are awesome for curly updos and other curly hairstyles.
The most important thing when caring for curly biracial hair is to know your tresses likes and dislikes. Once you’ve got that down, you’re good to go.
